How to prep fields

PYLGSA Field Prep Guidelines

Dirt infield Field Preparation

  1. Water the field to keep material dust minimized.

  2. Drag the field using golf cart and drag mat. Drag slowly in a circle, starting from the outer edge of the infield

    and working towards the middle.

  3. At the end of dragging, bring the drag through home plate and stop the cart at the pitching mound. Shake out

the excess material off the drag mat at the pitching mound.

  4. Roll up drag mat and place on cart then drive off field. Do not drag any dirt off the field.

  5. Rake out material around pitching mound.

  6. Water the field again to solidify the playing surface. Put extra water on the pitcher’s mound and batter’s box.

  7. Set the bases and pitchers rubber.

  8. Chalk the field.

  9. Play softball.

Chalking the Field

Pull a string line from the back corner of home plate through and beyond the middle of the double (outside single) first base. Chalk on the string line. This creates the first base foul line.

Pull a string line 36” away from, and parallel to, the first base foul line, chalk from halfway between home and first base, up to first base. This creates the first base running lane.

Pull a string line from the back corner of home plate through and beyond the outside of third base. (The base is in fair territory) Chalk on the string line. This creates the third base foul line.

Scribe a circle with an 8’ radius around the pitchers plate. Put the center point of the circle at the middle of the back edge of the pitchers plate. Chalk the scribe mark to create the pitcher’s circle.

Use the batter’s box templates to mark the outline of the batter’s boxes. The largest section of the batter’s box template faces forward. Chalk the batter’s box.

Create an approximate 5’ diameter on deck circle at a safe location near each dugout.

st rd Chalk an approximate 15’ x 3’ coaches box at both 1st and 3rd base.
