The League splits into National and American Divisions only in the spring season. During Fall Ball, there is only one division at each age level.

What are the differences between the American and National divisions?

During Spring season, the American division managers draft the American division teams. All girls that attend a tryout will be eligible for draft onto an American division team. The American division teams are typically more competitive and will practice more. American division managers are allowed to draft from all eligible girls in their age group. This means that practice locations may not be close to where you live. Girls playing in either American or National division teams are eligible for post-season all-star play.

How are Spring Season teams formed?

In the American division, the team managers draft teams. Each manager must freeze his/her daughter and his/her coach's daughter. Pitching talent is identified before the draft and a process is in place to evenly distribute the pitching talent among the teams. The managers in an open draft will select all other players. No buddies are allowed and managers have no geographical restrictions on selecting girls. Players with siblings within the same division will be placed on the same team.

The division Agents draft the National division teams. Teams are assigned to coaches primarily by geographical area (i.e. nearest school on the registration form). Girls that are buddies are placed on the same team. In order to have comparable skill levels between the teams in the division, the agents will assess overall team age and experience along with pitching talent. Once the agent is comfortable with the division makeup, he will then give the managers their teams.

Does my daughter have to attend a tryout?

T-Ball and 8U Players do not tryout. All girls playing in 10U, 12U, 14U or 16U must attend a tryout. Typically there will be tryouts on 1 or 2 Saturday mornings and 1 tryout on a Wednesday evening. No appointment is necessary. Players may attend any of the three tryouts offered. For the Spring Season, if you are unable to attend any of the tryouts, your daughter will be placed on a team, but will be ineligible for an American division team.

What can we expect at tryouts?

There are no set times for any age division. Each tryout lasts about 45 minutes to an hour, but you may have to wait in line during peak times. Each player takes 3 pop flys in the outfield and throws to 2B and then Home. Then, they take a few grounders at short and throw to 1B. They bat 5 times off the machine and run through 1B on the last one. Pitchers throw 5 pitches, catchers catch 5 pitched balls and throw to 1B and 2B.

My daughter has a good friend of hers playing in the league , can they be on the same team?

Buddy requests are allowed in T-Ball, 8-U and all of the National divisions. Write the name of the girl you would like your daughter to play with on your registration form. In most cases we are able to honor buddy or carpool requests. However, PYLGSA reserves the right to disallow buddies if, in so doing, it would create an unfair balance of skill levels between the teams. Buddy requests are not allowed in the American divisions.

My daughter turns 11 on January 2nd and would normally play in the 10U division. Can she

play up in division 12U?

In general, PYLGSA recommends that girls play in their assigned age division. Your daughter may "play up" a division with the approval of the division agent. Remember, because of the January 1st ASA age cutoff date, about 1/3 of the girls in the 12U division will actually be 13 during the season.

I can't afford the registration fee. Will my daughter still be allowed to participate?

The goal of PYLGSA is provide an opportunity for girls living in the community to play softball if they want to. PYLGSA does have a scholarship program for financial assistance. If you participate in the scholarship program, you may be asked to donate your time and/or skills to the league either in the snack bar or helping with field duty to offset your daughters registration fee. Contact the PYLGSA Registrar for additional information.

What is the difference between Spring and Fall Ball?

In Fall Ball, no game statistics are kept and there is an emphasis on skill development and instruction. All 10U, 12U and 14U Teams are subject to open draft, thus players of all skill and experience levels will play together. For these divisions, double Header games, under a drop-dead time limit are typically played on 10 Saturdays from September through November. The 8U Division plays just one game each Saturday during Winter Ball. The season culminates in a “Turkey Tournament” over Thanksgiving weekend.

How do I become involved with the Board of Directors?

If you have ideas about how to improve League activities, you need to step up to the plate to volunteer on a committee or take on a Committee Chairmanship. Chairs are appointed by the President and approved by a majority of the Executive Board. Please begin by attending some of the scheduled board meetings which are typically held every other Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the ERA Real Estate offices at 18431 Yorba Linda Blvd., near the corner of Lakeview and Yorba Linda Blvd. (See Calendar) All members of PYLGSA are always welcome to attend. Minutes of past Board Meeting can be viewed on the website.

How are the Board Members elected?

Parents or legal guardians of players are considered General Members of PYLGSA and may run for office. Nominations for elected officers are made in April. Nominees names are posted at the Snack Bars and on the website two weeks prior to the elections. All PYLGSA General Members are eligible to vote at the Annual General Membership Meeting (See Calendar on Back cover). No nominations are taken from the floor at this meeting. What if a majority of the team has a conflict with a scheduled game?

Since the schedule is limited by time, field availability, and possible weather problems, games will only be rescheduled due to a school or an organized community activity that causes the team to have less than eight (8) players available to play. The Manager or Coach requesting the reschedule, must do so in writing to their Division Agent at least 14 days prior to the scheduled game. (A Request to Reschedule form is furnished in the manager’s packet.) This form must list the names of the girls unable to attend the game.

How long are the scheduled games?

For Spring season, A “complete game” is defined by division:

16U, 14U, & 12U: 7 innings or 1 hour and 40 minutes, whichever comes first.

10U: 6 innings or 1 hour & 40 minutes, whichever comes first.

8U : 5 innings or 1 hour & 30 minutes, whichever comes first.

T-ball : 5 innings or 1 hour & 15 minutes, whichever comes first.

An official game is 4 complete innings for 16U, 14U, and 12U Divisions, and 3 complete innings for 8U and 10U Divisions. (If the home team is ahead, the second half of the last inning need not be played.) No new inning is started after the official time has elapsed. Games tied after the time limit has expired stand as a tie. Different rules will apply during Fall Ball.

How many innings is each player required to play?

In 12U, 14U and 16U each player present at the beginning of the game must play a minimum of 4 (four) complete innings in a 7 inning game. In 8U and 10U each player present at the beginning of the game must play a minimum of three (3) complete innings of a complete game as defined in PYLGSA POLICY Supplementary Rules Section 6. In all Divisions, no player shall sit out 2 or more consecutive innings.

What are the uniform and equipment requirements?

Each player is issued a shirt, shorts, and socks, which she may keep. Each player is also responsible for the purchase of their own compression shorts (the same color as the entire team), and at least one knee guard. Players may wear either “tennis” shoes or rubber cleats (baseball, softball, or soccer cleats), and may choose to wear caps or visors, sleeves, or sweatshirts. Batters and base runners must have their player number showing and must wear protective headgear (i.e., helmets equipped with chin strap and batting cage - T-Ball is only exception to the cage requirement). The league provides a supply of helmets to all teams, but players are welcome to have their own helmets. In keeping with ASA rules, jewelry may not be worn.

How are All Stars selected?

All Star teams are chosen by the managers of all the division teams to participate in the ASA post-season All Star program. These teams will compete in tournaments throughout the summer. Players are nominated from American and National Divisions.

In the National divisions, an intra-city All Star Tournament will be organized during the first few weeks of June. The configuration of this tournament will vary according to the number of girls participating in the divisions and the time available. Specific details about this year’s tournament will be arranged prior to the second half of the season and communicated by the Agents to all Team Managers and posted to the website.
